 Hey, maybe this will work.

A new home on a more appropriate channel forum, seeing as how Channel 4 haven't shown anything decent for positively ages.

Paul, angered by Ch4, but not entirely surprised!

Evening All

I like this place. It has spellcheck and as we all know, I need that.

Am I allowed to swear here? (Yes I know, it's not big and it's not clever...)

So who amongst us is watching The Wire on BBC2? I'll admit I'm not.

Little interview with Clarke Peters in today's Times.

Oh and 24 - I am loving it despite the TonyBad TonyGood TonyBad plot.

Okay, well, at least 2 responses have been deleted already, but we will persevere.

I did have a long message about the whole 24 thing on here, and I also commented that I had not been watching it on the Beeb, but that I had friends who were, and were now proper converts. I also mentioned how much I envied them seeing it for the first time again.

Nothing too controversial, but now gone.

Paul, hoping that we can have a wide ranging discussion on here that will always ultimately come back to our deep and abiding love for The Wire, and its forebearer, the late, the great Homicide: Life on the Street, without forum bods deleting us for going off topic.

Couple of points.

Wow, Tony has turned really bad in 24. Its almost unbelievable that he would do the things he is now doing so seemingly remorslessly and without pause. We've seen hints of his ruthlessness during the season, but nothing prepared me for what he seems willing to do, and who he seems willing to kill.I can't wait to find out why, and am still clinging to a sliver of hope that he is doing things for the right reasons, but at the moment, that seems far fetched at best.

House is still fun. The Mentalist entertains me despite itself, and I haven't watched Ashes to Ashes this season at all. Maybe that Life on Mars ending has ruined Gene Hunt for me forever.

In the Loop is a great film, very funny. State of Play is also very good. Its not as good as the BBC version, but I do wonder whether David Simon would appreciate the sympathy it shows towards true journalism. He might also be really irritated that they essentially stole his thesis about the decline in newspapers from Season 5 of The Wire, but I prefer to think he would be happy that he isn't alone in his opinion.

Paul, wondering whether the adap of Edge of Darkness will fair against the original as well.

I was concerned off-topic posts were going to get deleted but I guess this was the one you originally posted?

Me too. It's a twist too far though.  I hope it's not just because he has a new (evil) woman on the go.

I am hating the President's daughter.  A complete lack of intelligence, judgment or integrity. Hopefully Aaron will catch on and tell all.

Agree about The Mentalist. Annoying but in a fun way.

Did anyone see Endgame? I think I'll have to catch a repeat as I heard good things.

Idris Elba interview here.  And I am on-topic...

CBS Moves CSI: NY and Other May Finale Airdates

CBS has confirmed its plan to join ABC and NBC in covering President Obama's upcoming prime-time news conference, and the ripple effect is far-reaching for the Eye's May sweeps plans.

For starters, a Rules of Engagement-New Adventures of Old Christine pairing originally slated for this Wednesday at 8pm/ET has been pushed to May 13.

Don't know how to quote specific sections of someone's post but re: Endgame, might be best to install the 4OD software.

Anyway back to The Wire (David Simon) related stuff, they've cut the shows a week to 3, with an omnibus on the graveyard shift on a Friday.

Anyone know if the pilot for Treme has been released?

Now my last post was deleted, so let's see if this sticks?

When you reply to a post you get the original at the top and a red box. Click the red box and it does a quotey thing for the whole post and I guess you just edit away. Or something...

No idea about the Treme stuff.

Dominic West appears on Eminem's new album and the "esteemed musical publication" that is the NME  snarks about The Wire stars making music.  I should add my reason for visiting the website is the free mp3 of the day. Mostly cringeworthy indie kid rubbish but occasionally they have something I like.

Speaking of music, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have never really appeared on my radar screen (to sort of paraphrase Munch) but of the stuff I have heard from the new album, I really like it.

Both the Homicide and The Corner books have been re-issued with The Wire style covers. Cash-in kerching?

Paul - have you seen Caprica? I read somewhere that it was available on dvd and download.

Endgame was on last night at 7 p.m. Very good.

Am I OK to see Caprica before seeing BSG, as it is a prequel?

I haven't seen Caprica, but am looking forward to it. Can't comment on whether you should watch it before Battlestar. Yes, its a prequel, but its a different beast when you know whats coming. And the writers clearly did, so thats how I would watch it.

Having said that, its a pilot to a TV show, and I sure it stands up on its own. If not, its done already, I would guess.

In a prequel kind of mood at the moment, having seen Star Trek yesterday. Must admit that I had a stupid goofy grin on my face the whole time, so while its not necessary to have seen the rest of Star Trek to get this one (my nephew knew nothing about Star Trek and he loved it!), but there is plenty in there for the older fan to enjoy. I don't think I have flat out enjoyed a trip to the cinema as much as I did yesterday in a long time.

Saw Wolverine a couple of days earlier, and while I remember being entertained, I couldn't tell you a thing about it now, it is that forgettable.

Paul, who must track down Endgame, who is now seemingly addicted to The Apprentice, and who is still not up on Ashes to Ashes - is the new season any good?

I think the introduction of Roger Allam as Supt 'Supermac' Macintosh is a masterstroke.  I remember seeing Roger Allam playing some pompus baddie when I was younger I'm sure, but then he turned up in a Catherine Tate sketch, and then was wonderful in the Thick of it, after Chris Langham was written out for obvious reasons.

The one show I would recommend to both Paul and Snarky is Underbelly and the sequel - A Tale of Two Cities.  Ok so the dialogue isn't up there with the Wire, or The Shield, or the Sopranos, but it hooked me in - especially as they're based on real events.

2 things to bear in mind - the cast is made up predominantly of every major Australian TV actor bar those that went on to be successful overseas.  It's a who's who of alumni from Home and Away, Neighbours, Blue Murder, The Secret Life of Us etc.

oh, and the other thing, that does grate initially, but then you forget about it eventually, over-use of the word 'mate'.

So, a week of season and series finale's in the states, and here's my comments for all to view.

House was great, although apparently they have done this ending before. I was duped.

Greys Anatomy was quite moving in its own way, although they stole a big chunk of the finale story from ER (Think Gant and a pager!). I spent the whole episode knowing the twist, thinking that they had made it all so easy, and wondering whether they were gonna surprise me, only for them not to surprise and still pull it off. It was pretty impressive. What amazed me more was the number of online reviewers who completely missed it, and were taken in by it. I guess I'm getting old if I can recall what happened in ER 15 years ago, but the modern reviewers can't.

The Office has completely moved out of the Gervais shadow, and is now a better overall show. Its do good it could be a drama, and the character beats are by far the best part of the show, just as they were in The Office's UK ending. But it still has the ability to make me laugh out loud. I doubt Gervais had the talent to keep the UK one going into a fifth season, but then he also wouldn't have had the writing staff.

And then there's Prison Break, which had the final ten minutes it should have had at the end of the second season, so we could have done without the frankly ridiculous third and fourth seasons. All that nonsense with Scylla aside, the actual ending was moving like the end of Third Watch was moving. It was always fun to watch, but better writers than me have made the point the US Network television is all about how many hours you can produce, so you can syndicate, so shows like Prison Break get drawn out to ridiculous extremes just to get the hours in. This should have been a two season show at most, nothing more. As I said, though, always fun to watch!

Paul, who notes that Steve Zahn, who is in Treme, has said that filming has to wait until after the hurricane season so that they can get insurance, which is sensible and September time. Not sure if the pilot is already in the bag or not, though.

I don't know, I mean yes the third and fourth seasons dragged a bit I felt, but without them we wouldn't have had arugably the scenario for the finale.  I'm keen to see what the movie does so we get to see how they arrived at that end, but as you pointed out, Network shows tend to drag out the story until the finale is worhwhile, and Heroes definitely qualifies at this point.

I'm a bit late to the party, but I have been really enjoying Flight of the Conchords, i think the humour is up there with the US Office and 30 Rock.

Talking of late to the party, everyone in the media is going nuts for the Wire, which makes me wonder what would have happened if Carnivale had the same ringing endorsement?

g, who notes that Manchester (United) are champions and congrats to them, even if we did throw it away at points this season.  I don't agree with some writers that is Rafa's fault, that he galvanised Man U with his attack on Ferguson (when would have been the right time - close season would have seemed like sour grapes).  I think that attack has been a long time coming and it needed to be said, and if you look hypocrite up in the dictionary you'll see a picture of Mr Ferguson next to it, but you will also see a picture of Mr Ferguson next to the word 'winner' in the dictionary, so kids will see him and his players as role models for how to succeed.  This may seem like sour grapes, but I have felt for a long time that integrity is severely lacking in Mr Ferguson (I refuse to include Sir, becuase if Bob Paisley and Bill Shankly aren't Sirs, he sure as hell shouldn't be), whereas Sir Matt Busby was a gentleman who was respected by his fiercest rivals (especially Shankly), Ferguson gives no respect and therefore deserves none.  As for these hacks on Sunday Supplement, they were saying at the start of the season that Liverpool should at least be challenging for the title - they did, and then they say that they should have won it and it isn't good enough. Um, excuse me, have they ever managed a club to a Spanish League title? All they are is fans with a pen, fickle and lacking any knowledge of the game to understand not everything goes your way.

Sorry , ranted for a bit there. I think next year is the year to REALLY build on, we need number 19, they can't overtake us. Rafa needs to understand the style of teams like Hull and Blackburn etc aren't blessed with the same resources as Liverpool, so Liverpool have to counteract that.  a couple more game-changers and a couple more good quality squad players and I think we will really shock the Premiership next time around.

Wow, there's a movie! And its on Sky next week!

Don't get me wrong, I always enjoyed Prison Break, but there were only so many things you could do with this show, and by the end of the second season, they had done it all. So in the third season, they essentially did it all again, and then made up this macguffin of the scylla magic bit of tech that can either kill us all or save us all or cure us all or something else magic, and I really did start to wonder why I bothered. But I did like the characters enough to stick with it, and I was glad that they had that bit of an ending that kinda finished their stories well.

But apparently not, there's a movie to fill in the gap I had no desire to see filled. Oh well, I will no doubt watch it. What has surprised me is how much it has faded away in the states. Almost no one watched the last few eps, so I am surprised they felt the need to do another couple of hours, really.

Paul, who completely agrees on the hidious Ferguson, and his apparent stooge Alardyce. Agree that he is a great manager, but I think as you say he is a fairly horrible person that doesn't deserve that Knighthood at all. But I'm not bitter, no not me!
